Peltonen M95 Ranger Knife Coyote Handle (cerakote, composite)
The Peltonen M95 Ranger Knife, also known as the Peltonen puukko, has become a true legend and is well known among knife enthusiasts around the world. The knife was designed by retired Finnish Army captain Juha-Pekka Peltonen. During his military service he participated in **United Nations peacekeeping missions in Lebanon and Cyprus. After leaving the army, Peltonen decided to create an ideal military field knife based on his real combat and field experience.
He noticed that many combat knives perform well in close combat but are not practical for everyday field tasks. Soldiers, however, need a knife for daily use even more often than for combat situations. This insight inspired him to design a knife that combines tactical reliability with practical functionality.
Peltonen used the traditional Finnish puukko knife as a foundation. By combining classic Finnish design with modern materials and technology, he created a versatile tool suitable for both combat and everyday use. The knife became known as Sissipuukko: “Sissi” meaning ranger or guerrilla fighter, and “puukko” referring to the traditional Finnish knife. The name can be translated as “Peltonen’s Ranger Knife.” It is widely used by soldiers of the Finnish Defence Forces and the Swedish Armed Forces.
Blade
The knife features a 150 mm hand‑forged blade with a thickness of 4.25 mm, made from 80CrV2 carbon steel. The blade is coated with Cerakote ceramic coating, a highly durable and wear‑resistant finish that protects the blade from impacts, moisture, and aggressive chemicals, significantly reducing the risk of corrosion.
The blade uses a Scandi grind, where the cutting edge is formed by straight bevels that meet at zero. This type of grind provides excellent cutting performance and is particularly suitable for woodworking tasks. The gradual drop of the spine toward the tip improves the knife’s penetration capability. Another advantage of the Scandinavian grind is that the knife is easy to sharpen in field conditions.
Handle
The handle follows the traditional puukko shape with a characteristic mushroom‑shaped pommel. This design allows a secure grip in the palm. The handle is large enough for a full grip and comfortable to use even while wearing gloves.
A small guard at the base prevents fingers from slipping onto the blade. The handle is made from durable TPE rubber‑like thermoplastic, providing excellent grip even in wet conditions. Additional textured grooves at the lower part improve control and safety.
Sheath
The knife comes with lightweight and durable composite sheaths that securely hold the knife in different positions. Peltonen designed the sheath with a unique EasyLock roller locking system. A rubber wheel inside the throat acts as a retainer. When inserting or removing the knife, the guard rotates the wheel, allowing the blade to slide smoothly in and out while remaining securely locked.
The sheath is compatible with the MOLLE mounting system, allowing the knife to be attached to belts, thigh rigs, gear, or other tactical equipment. A nylon strap threaded through special openings on the sheath provides secure mounting.
The Peltonen M95 Sissipuukko Ranger Knife represents Finnish knife‑making expertise at its best. Its design includes everything necessary without unnecessary elements. Originally developed as a combat knife, its versatility makes it equally effective as a hunting knife, camping knife, survival knife, or general outdoor tool.
